چکیده

Ultrafast dynamical processes in solids may be triggered, studied and even manipulated with help of ultrashort laser pulses. Also for materials processing there is an enormous potential of ultrashort laser pulses. Thus, femtosecond laser–solid interaction is of significant interest to the fields of both basic research and industrial applications. Here, I present results of theoretical considerations motivated by this intersection between fundamental physics and technical applications. The time-resolved description of the dynamics of a solid during and after irradiation with an ultrashort laser pulse is a challenging task: On ultrashort time scales the irradiated material passes through highly non–equilibrium states of different kinds. Therefore, the theoretical description of the investigated processes may differ strongly from the classical descriptions valid for equilibrium or steady–state conditions. I focus on the necessary differences in the description of the material response due to the short duration of the exciting laser pulses and compare this with established concepts valid for longer pulses. The basic processes during laser ablation with laser pulses of moderate intensities in the region of the ablation threshold, such as excitation, melting and material removal are temporally separated when femtosecond laser pulses are applied, allowing a separate investigation of each of them. Fig. 1 shows a schematic view of the typical time

Influence of Interface Thermal Resistance on Relaxation Dynamics of Metal-Dielectric Nanocomposite Materials under Ultrafast Pulse Laser Excitation

Nanocomposite materials, including noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host medium, are interesting because of their optical properties linked to surface plasmon resonance phenomena. For studding of nonlinear optical properties and/or energy transfer process, these materials may be excited by ultrashort pulse laser with a temporal width varying from some femtoseconds to some hund...

Ultrafast evolution of the excited-state potential energy surface of TiO2 single crystals induced by carrier cooling.

We investigate the influence of carrier cooling dynamics in TiO(2) on the excited-state potential energy surface along the A(1g) optical phonon coordinate after above band-gap excitation using ultrashort ultraviolet pulses. The large amplitude coherent oscillation observed in a pump-probe transient reflectivity measurement shows a phase shift of -0.2π with respect to a purely instantaneous disp...

Model for Ultrashort Laser-pulse Induced Ionization Dynamics in Transparent Solids

A comprehensive model of ultrafast laser-induced plasma generation intended for coupling with pulse propagation simulations in transparent solids is introduced. It simultaneously accounts for the changing spectrum of a propagating ultrashort laser pulse while coupling to the evolution of the energy-resolved nonequilibrium free-carrier distribution. The presented results indicate that strong pul...

Super-diffusion of excited carriers in semiconductors

The ultrafast spatial and temporal dynamics of excited carriers are important to understanding the response of materials to laser pulses. Here we use scanning ultrafast electron microscopy to image the dynamics of electrons and holes in silicon after excitation with a short laser pulse. We find that the carriers exhibit a diffusive dynamics at times shorter than 200 ps, with a transient diffusi...
